Turpin High School will be represented by two young talented tennis stars at next week's state tournament. Katie Bercz and Gabby Verdin clinched a spot in the tournament with a successful districts run. The dynamic duo kicked off Thursday with a demolition of the number one seed from the Troy section. This win lined them up with a matchup against a solid Bellbrook team. Pushed, but not at all overwhelmed, the Spartans managed a straight set victory, 6-2, 6-4.
Clinching a state birth, Turpin will have a state doubles team in Columbus for the first time since Sam Wilke and Will Knoll in 2008. Beaming with excitement and pumped with adrenaline, Gabby and Katie took the stage Saturday to look to improve their seeding for the state tournament. They made it to the finals, but by unfortunate means. Their opponents from Mason had to retire from the semifinal because of a tragic knee injury in the 2nd game of the match. We wish the injured Mason player the best, moving forward into next week. Regardless, Gabby and Katie are looking forward to playing in the state tournament and representing Turpinas a 2 seed from their district. Congratulations and good luck Gabby and Katie!
