The first competitive week in ladies tennis was a successful one. The season kicked off with the Eastside Doubles Tournament on Tuesday. First doubles team, Gabby Verdin and Katie Bercz, won their flight. Second doubles team Caroline Millard and Sarah Wilke, along with third and fourth doubles pairings of Zanda Orgil and Brogan Bennell, and Catie Sherman and Sara Meek came in 2nd place.
The schools participating in the tournament were Turpin, Anderson, Seven Hills, and Summit Country Day. Overall, Turpin finished first place for the second year in a row.
On Wednesday began the State Tournament, in which the lady Spartans squared off against Oak Hills. Gabby Verdin and Katie Bercz won at 1st and 2nd singles, while doubles swept their opponents with Abby Toerner and Ellen Antoinades at the 1st spot, and Caroline Millard and Sarah Wilke at the 2nd. Turpin won 4-1, advancing to the next round against West Carrolton.
On Thursday Ursuline B traveled to the Turpin courts. The wind played as the third opponent in the match, but the girls persevered, pulling out another 4-1 win.
The weekend featured participation in the annual CCD Invite. CCD, Summit Country Day, Walnut Hills, Anderson, and CHCA made up the competition. Katie Bercz, Ellen Antoniades and Abby Toerner, and Caroline Millard and Sarah Wilke all won their flights, while Gabby Verdin and Brogan Bennell came in 2nd place. As a team, Turpin High School triumphed as champions of the CCD Invite for the second consecutive year. The team had a very successful first week and looks to build upon their strong start.
