On Tuesday, January 13 at Klinger Court the Milford Eagle JV squad knocked off Turpin (6-4, 4-2 ECC) 50-37, breaking a five game Turpin winning streak.
Turnovers were an issue for the Spartans in the contest. Owen Richardson began the game’s scoring with a drive to the hoop, then after a Milford bucket, Richardson scored again to give Turpin a 4-2 lead. After back to back Eagle baskets, Marc Gendreau drove the lane for a basket. He then scored a conventional three point play after a Milford score, which tied the game at 9-9. Drew Sesler answered a Milford hoop with a three pointer, then Gendreau answered a Milford score with a basket of his own, and the Spartans led 14-13 after one quarter. The Eagles began the second quarter on an 8-0 run to go up 21-14, until Brad Herndon scored with 3:23 left in the quarter. Milford scored again to go up 23-16, but the Spartans answered with two baskets by Michael Grotton to cut the deficit to 23-20 at halftime.
The teams traded baskets to start the third quarter, then Milford scored five straight until Jack Campbell was fouled shooting a three pointer. He made all three shots to cut the Eagle lead to 30-25. That was as close as the Spartans would get, however, as the Eagles scored seven straight to go up 37-25. Gendreau made a free throw and Campbell had a steal and breakaway layup to cut the deficit to 37-28 going into the fourth quarter. The Eagles gradually pulled away in the fourth, leading by as many as 16 at 48-32. Ricardo Rodriguez scored a breakaway layup off a pass from Grotton, then Dylan Calder drained a three after an Eagle hoop to make the final score 50-37. The Spartans were led in scoring by Gendreau with 10 points, followed by Richardson with six, Campbell five, Grotton and Brad Herndon with four, Sesler and Calder with three apiece (each on three pointers), and Rodriguez two. The Spartans return to ECC action Friday, January 16 with a game at Kings. Tip-off is 6:00 pm.
