Spartan JV cages Withrow Tigers 42-29

JV Boys Basketball

On Friday, January 9 the red hot Turpin JV (6-3, 4-1 ECC) won their fifth straight, knocking off Withrow on the road 42-29.  All victories during the win streak have been by double digits.

The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Jack Campbell answered with a basket on a drive to the hoop.  Withrow scored again, but Marc Gendreau scored off a feed from Brad Herndon to knot the score at 4-4.  Gendreau then gave the Spartans a lead they would not relinquish by draining a three pointer after a Tiger basket, giving Turpin a 7-6 lead after one quarter.  The second quarter was all Turpin as they outscored the Tigers 11-2.  Herndon made two free throws, then after a Withrow basket the Spartans scored the final nine points of the quarter on a Campbell basket, Herndon three pointer, another Campbell bucket and a Michael Grotton buzzer beater at the end of the half, giving the Spartans an 18-8 lead.

After the Tigers scored to open the third quarter, the Spartans went on a 7-0 run on a three pointer by Gendreau, basket by Jack Tyskiewicz, and a Gendreau bucket.  A Tiger basket cut the deficit to 24-12, but the Spartans went on another run on two Tyskiewicz free throws, and baskets by Grotton and Drew Sesler which gave Turpin a 30-12 lead.  Withrow stopped the run with a basket, but then Campbell scored, and after a Tiger hoop Sesler made two free throws and Campbell scored again to give the Spartans a 36-16 lead.  The Tigers scored four straight to end the quarter, but the Spartans still had a commanding 36-20 lead.  Owen Richardson scored off an offensive rebound to open fourth quarter scoring, and drained a three after a Tiger hoop to put the Spartans up 41-22.  The Tigers then rattled off five straight.  Collin McAninch made a free throw to stop the run, and Withrow scored the last basket of the game to make the final score 42-29 in favor of the Spartans.  Turpin was led in scoring by Campbell with 10 points, followed by Gendreau with nine (one three), Richardson (one three) and Herndon with five apiece, Tyskiewicz, Grotton, and Sesler scored four each, and McAninch had one.  The Spartans next take on Milford at Klinger Court Tuesday, January 13.  Tip-off is 6:00 pm.
