On Friday, February 13, the Turpin JV squad (10-10, 6-6 ECC) defeated the Withrow Tigers 38-30, and swept the season series.
The Spartans jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a three pointer by Owen Richardson, followed by a basket by Ricardo Rodriguez. The Tigers scored four straight, but Jack Campbell scored, and Jack Glandt hit a three to put the Spartans up 10-4. The Tigers answered with a conventional three point play, but Glandt drained another three to make the score 13-7. Withrow then went on a 5-1 run to end the quarter. The only Spartan scoring during the run was a free throw by Matt Wiesenhahn, and Turpin led 14-13 after one. Adam Cameron started the second quarter with a bucket, but the Tigers scored three straight to tie the game at 16-16. Wiesenhahn then scored, but Withrow scored the last six points of the quarter to take a 21-18 lead into halftime.
The Spartans came out blazing in the third quarter. Campbell scored back to back hoops to pull the Spartans back into the lead at 22-21. The Tigers answered, but then Drew Sesler proceeded to knock in three straight three pointers to give the Spartans a lead they would not relinquish at 31-23. The Tigers stopped the Sesler run with a basket, but Wiesenhahn scored to put Turpin back up 33-25. Withrow scored the final basket of the quarter, but Turpin was up 33-27. The Spartans protected the lead in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Tigers 5-3, on a basket by Sesler and conventional three point play by Wiesenhahn. Turpin evened up its season and conference record with the 38-30 victory. Turpin was led in scoring by Sesler with 11 (three three pointers), followed by Wiesnhahn with eight, Campbell and Glandt (two threes) with six apiece, Richardson (one three) with three, and Rodriguez and Cameron with two each. The Spartans now enter the final week of the season beginning with a game at Milford Tuesday, February 17. Tip-off is 6:00 pm.
