The Turpin Spartan JV squad (5-3, 3-1 ECC) travelled to Anderson on Tuesday, January 6 and walloped the Redskins on their home court, 58-35. Brad Herndon opened the scoring with a basket. Anderson answered with a basket, but then Owen Richardson scored and Matt Wiesenhan let the hosts know how the evening would go with a slam dunk on a breakaway.
After an Anderson basket cut the Spartan lead to 6-4, Marc Gendreau scored back to back baskets on drives, and Ben Hemmelgarn knocked down a three to give Turpin a 13-4 lead. After a Redskin basket, Hemmelgarn made a free throw, then Jack Tyskiewicz scored off a pass from Wiesenhahn for a 16-6 Turpin lead. The Redskins answered with a three to cut the Spartan lead to 16-9 after one quarter. Turpin kept rolling in the second quarter on a basket by Jack Campbell. After a Redskin free throw, Campbell scored again off a feed from Michael Grotton for a 20-10 lead. Gendreau knocked down two free throws, then after an Anderson hoop the Spartans went on an 8-0 run to end the quarter on a Gendreau three, a Campbell offensive rebound basket and a Hemmelgarn three. The Spartans took a 30-12 lead into halftime.
Any hope the Redskins may have had to get back in the game was quickly extinguished thanks to a 12-2 Turpin run to open the third quarter. Wiesenhahn scored off an offensive rebound, then after a Redskin basket, Drew Sesler scored in the paint then drained a three. Dylan Calder followed with a three, then Campbell scored off an offensive rebound for a 42-14 Spartan lead. The Redskins scored seven straight to end the quarter, but the Spartans still lead 42-21. Turpin opened the fourth quarter on a 10-3 run to go up 52-24. Herndon scored baskets around a Redskin hoop, and Wiesenhahn made a free throw, then scored a conventional three point play. Owen Richardson finished off the run with a basket. After a Redskin hoop, Campbell opened the lead up to 29 points with a three pointer, giving Turpin a 55-26 lead. After back to back Anderson baskets, Adam Cameron scored. Richardson finished Turpin’s scoring with a free throw. Final score 58-35, Turpin’s fourth straight win. Campbell led the Spartans in scoring with 11 points (one three), followed by Gendreau with nine (one three), Wiesenhahn eight, Hemmelgarn with seven (two threes), Herndon six, Richardson and Sesler (one thee) with five apiece, Calder with three (one three), and Tyskiewicz and Cameron two apiece. The Spartans stay in ECC play in their next contest, as they travel to Withrow on Friday, January 9. Tip-off is 6:00 pm.
