On Tuesday, February 10 the Turpin JV (9-10) headed west to Harrison, found their shooting goggles, and blew out the Wildcats 69-41 in a non-league contest. The Spartans came out on fire, snapping out of their recent offensive doldrums and stayed in control of the game throughout.
Marc Gendreau hit a three pointer to start the game. The Wildcats answered with a basket, but Owen Richardson scored on a cut to the bucket for a 5-2 Turpin lead. After a Harrison hoop, a three point barrage by the Spartans began: Gendreau drained his second of the quarter, then Drew Sesler made one to give the Spartans an 11-4 lead. The Wildcats answered with a three, but Sesler hit another. Again, the Wildcats hit a three to cut the Turpin lead to 14-10. Matt Wiesenhahn joined in with a conventional three point play, then Sesler wrapped up the quarters’ scoring with his third three to put the Spartans up 20-10 after one quarter. The Spartans widened the lead to begin the second quarter on baskets by Jack Tyskiewicz and Jack Glandt. The Wildcats hit a three, but the Spartans kept charging on back to back baskets by Owen Richardson and Brad Herndon, widening the lead to 28-13. Harrison made a free throw, but Sesler hit a three to put Turpin up 31-14. The Wildcats scored four straight before Michael Grotton scored. The Wildcats made two free throws to wrap up second quarter scoring, but the Spartans had a 33-20 lead going into halftime.
The Spartans continued to rain threes in the third. Gendreau hit one to start the quarter. The Wildcats answered, and after a Herndon bucket they hit another three to cut the Spartan lead to 38-26. Sesler and Richardson got into the act with back to back triples, then Will Hausfeld hit a basket to put the Spartans up 46-26. After a Wildcat hoop, Hausfeld and Sesler hit threes grow the lead to 52-28. The Wildcats hit a three of their own to trim Turpin’s lead to 52-31 going into the fourth quarter. The Spartans did not let up on the gas in the fourth quarter. After a Harrison bucket, Wiesenhahn scored, but the Wildcats scored to cut the lead to 54-35. Turpin answered with a 13-1 run, again powered by three pointers-this time by Dylan Calder, Jack Campbell and Collin McAninch. Campbell and Ben Hemmelgarn scored two pointers during the run. At that point the Spartans led 67-36. The Wildcats went on a 5-0 run until Ricardo Richardson wrapped up the games’ scoring with a basket to give the Spartans a 69-41 victory. When all was said and done, the Spartans made 14 three pointers and all players who suited up scored. Turpin was led in scoring by Sesler with 18 points (six three pointers), followed by Gendreau with nine (three threes), Richardson seven (one three), Wiesenhahn, Hausfeld (one three), and Campbell (one three) with five apiece, Herdon four, McAninch and Calder with three (both three pointers), and Tyskiewicz, Hemmelgarn, Grotton, Glandt and Rodriguez with two each. The Spartans next return to ECC action with a game against Withrow at Klinger Court on Friday, February 13. Tip-off is 6:00 pm.
