On Friday, February 20 the Turpin Spartan JV (10-11, 6-7 ECC) fell to Kings at Klinger Court 47-46. The game was tightly contested throughout, with no team holding more than a five point lead. The game’s early stages were ragged, as if both teams had been off school for a week.
Brad Herndon got the Spartans on the board with a basket. The Knights answered with three straight, but the Spartans scored five in a row on a basket by Matt Wiesenhahn and a three pointer by Jack Tyskiewicz. Jack Glandt followed a Kings free throw with a basket, and the Spartans led 9-4 after one quarter. The second quarter began with the Knights scoring four straight to cut the lead to 9-8, but Michael Grotton and Glandt scored to put the Spartans back up by five at 13-8. Kings chipped away at the lead with a basket that was answered by Wiesenhahn, but then the Knights scored the last four points of the quarter and the Spartans only led 15-13 at halftime.
Wiesenhahn scored to open the third quarter, but the Knights knocked down a three to cut the lead to 17-16. Herndon scored to put the Spartans back up, but Kings scored four straight. Drew Sesler knocked down a three to put Turpin back on top at 22-20. The see saw game continued as the Knights scored four straight to go back on top, but Herndon hit a three to give Turpin a 25-24 lead. Kings responded with three in a row, but Tyskiewicz scored to tie the game at 27-27. Wiesenhahn then scored after a Knights basket, and the score was tied 29-29 going into the fourth quarter. The Knights jumped on top with a three to start the fourth, but the Spartans scored back to back hoops by Grotton and Jack Campbell to go up 33-32. Again the teams went back and forth, as the Knights scored to go back on top. Sesler scored in the lane, then hit a three after a Knight basket. Campbell scored again, and the Spartans were up 40-36. After a Knight free throw, Wiesenhahn scored to put Turpin up by five, but Kings scored on a conventional three point play to shave the lead to 42-40 at the 2:00 mark. Grotton scored off a steal, but the Knights score five straight to go up 45-44. Campbell answered with a basket to put the Spartans back on top with 11 seconds remaining. With seven seconds left, a Kings player was fouled on a loose ball situation and he drained both free throws. The Spartans were able to advance the ball for a final shot in the frantic final seconds, but a corner three just rimmed out at the buzzer and the Knights escaped with a 47-46 victory. The Spartans were led in scoring by Wiesenhahn with 10 points, followed by Sesler with eight (two three pointers), Herndon with seven (one three), Grotton and Campbell with six apiece, Tyskiewicz with five (one three), and Glandt with four. The Spartans now wrap up their season with a game at Milford, Tuesday, February 24. This is a rescheduled date, as last week’s game was postponed due to weather. Tip-off is 6:00 pm.
