No Mercy for Spartans

Turpin finished up the month of January with a home game against a solid Mercy Bobcat team who came in with 12 wins to show for their current season. The visitors used their aggressive defense to jump out to any early 5-0 lead before a fine piece of individual skill from Maggie Argus got the Spartans on the board. After receiving the ball on the left block, Maggie dribbled around the key before draining the right handed lay-up. The Spartans were getting good looks and second chances as Erin Reed’s two offensive rebounds and steal contributed to the effort. Corinne Nikolai went 3 of 4 from the charity stripe to account for the rest of first quarter tally as the Spartans found themselves down 10-5.

Defense was prominent from both squads in the 2nd quarter, but teams took care of the ball as the offense picked up. Natalie Rowland’s three pointer got the scoring started followed by a timely pass from Emma Schulok that set up a Brielle Robinson basket. Before Allison Christopher’s basket, Ashley Mountain hit a lone free throw to account for the scoring as both teams scored eight in the quarter. Turpin was down 18-13 at intermission. An entertaining third quarter ensued as both teams found their touch. Emma Schulok hit a jumper thanks to a fine pass by Natalie Rowland which cut the deficit to three. After a Mercy basket, Allison Christopher saved the ball from going out under the Spartan basket as she flipped it to Brielle Robinson for a bucket. After the Bobcats drained a three pointer, Katie Osborne scored on an offensive rebound put back. Both Schulok and Nikolai went 2 for 2 from the foul line in the quarter but Mercy continued to trade baskets with the hosts. Turpin trailed 31-23 going into the final six minutes. The Spartans took the ball to the rim in the 4th quarter trying to take advantage of Mercy’s foul situation. Scoring was at a premium the first several minutes as Mercy lost their touch; however, Turpin could only manage foul shots. Mountain went 1 of 2 and Nikolai 3 of 4 from the line before a Nikolai jumper cut the deficit to five with under two minutes to play. Mercy took advantage of Turpin’s defensive urgency which resulted in them regaining their touch. A three pointer by Nikolai was answered with a Mercy three pointer, their 4th of the contest, to keep the Spartans from getting any closer. Final score THS 32 - MHS 43. Scoring line: Mountain 2; Robinson 4; Nikolai 13; Christopher 2; Argus 2; Osborne 2; Rowland 3; Schulok 4 Turpin goes into February 9-6 with the next game February 14th against Winton Woods. Stay strong Spartans!
