Spartans Come Up Short to Neighborhood Rivals

Turpin made the short trip to McNicholas High School to take on the Rockets to start off the week. The visiting Spartans found themselves in a defensive struggle early as Allison Christopher recorded two baskets to open up the scoring while Corinne Nikolai scored on an offensive rebound. However, the Spartans were down 8-6 after the opening frame due to two three pointers by the host Rockets.

Defense was again the name of the game in the 2nd quarter as both teams forced turnovers and rebounded well. The Spartans yielded only six points in the second; however, could only score four of their own. An inventive pass from Emma Schulok set up an Ashley Mountain basket. A pass by Erin Reed set up Maggie Argus, but Maggie was fouled
in the act of shooting. She calmly made both her free throws to account for the scoring. Turpin was down 14-10 at intermission.

Turpin opened the half determined to get back into the game which they did. Emma Schulok earned another assist – this time to Corinne Nikolai as her basket cut the deficit to two. After a Rocket basket, their only field goal of the quarter, Natalie Rowland assisted a Brielle Robinson jump shot. After the Rockets sank a pair of free throws, Nikolai did the same after being fouled on an offensive rebound put back. Turpin trailed 18-16 going into the final quarter.

Knowing that the Spartans needed to quickly create offensive chances, the Rocket guards dialed up their defense in the 4th quarter. They forced turnovers that resulted into multiple layups. Turpin managed a seven point quarter highlighted by a lovely coast to coast layup by Ashley Mountain and a three point jumper from Allison Christopher, but the hosts doubled up the Spartans in the 4th as they converted their free throws to go along with their defense. The final score was not indicative of the parity of both teams.

Final score THS 23 - MHS 32.

Scoring line: Mountain 4; Robinson 2; Nikolai 8; Christopher 7; Argus 2

The 8-5 Turpin Freshman return home on Saturday, January 31st, against Mercy. Stay strong Spartans!
