In the second home game of the season under the new stadium lights, the Women's Spartans soccer team played a very good Fairfield Indians team, but couldn’t capitalize on numerous offensive opportunities for the go ahead score and win.
Sophomore Elise Crew earned her first varsity start at forward and demonstrated she will be a contributing offensive player this season, nice work Elise. Sophomore Taylor Gebhart provided an early spark for the Spartans as she pressured a Fairfield defender near the end line in the offensive goal box, chipped a cross to the front of the goal, where Senior Captain Caroline Mink snapped a header into the corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
With 8 minutes remaining in the first half, the Indians were able to muster some confidence and began controlling the action on our defensive side of the field, worked the ball around the offensive players, and found an opening from 20 yards out, placing the ball in the upper 90, just out of the reach of Goal Keeper, Caroline Welsh, for the equalizer and 1-1 tie.
The second half was clearly dominated by the Spartans as they had numerous offensive chances for the go ahead score, but the Fairfield goal keeper was able to deny the Spartans of earning a game winning goal. The match ended in a 1-1 tie, with neither team scoring in the second half.
The Spartans are now 1-0-1, and have two away games at Lakota West on Thursday, August 27th at 7:00 pm, and Kings on Tuesday, September 1st, 7:00 pm. The Spartans return to Spartan Stadium against Lakota East on Saturday, September 5th, at 12:00 pm.
