Last week, the Women Spartans suffered a tough 5-3 loss against the Lakota West Firebirds. The 1-0 Saturday afternoon win against the Lakota East Thunderhawks, propelled the Lady Spartans’ record to a respectful; 2-1-1 (0-0-0 in the ECC), going into the important ECC conference games starting this week against the Milford Eagles.
The Lady Spartans started off very strong by controlling the possession and making credible offensive runs and quality shots. You could sense their determination to overcome the disappointing loss to the Lakota West Firebirds.
Senior Anna Richards returned to play after suffering an early season knee injury and provided a spark to the offense by earning a corner kick with 25 minutes left in the first half. Junior Brittany Gardner placed the corner ball nicely into the box for Senior Captain Melanie Langan who found open space for the header, which sliced into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead and eventual game winner.
The second half was mostly controlled by the Lady Spartans as they easily handled Lakota East’s offensive threats and pressured every Thunderhawk possession. The Spartans returned to their physical and possession style play and were rewarded with the second win of the 2015 season going into ECC conference play. The game ended with neither team scoring in the second half and Turpin recording the win, 1-0.
Spartan Goalkeeper Sophomore Caroline Welsh and the rotating cast of experienced defenders marked their 2nd season shutout.
The Lady Spartans travel to the Milford Eagles on Tuesday, September 8th; at 7:00 pm (JV Gold starts at 5:00 pm). This will be the Lady Spartans’ first ECC conference game of the 2015 season. The past three years v. the Milford Eagles have ended in a tie, and in the past 6 years (going back to the 2009 season) we have either tied or lost.
Time for a Spartan Strong ECC conference WIN…
