Spartan freshman win tough battle over Little Miami

The Freshman Spartans (4-8 ECC, 11-9) had a comfortable lead the entire game but had to hold on to win 38-34. This was one of those games that at times looked more like a football game. It was very physical and what was a foul for both teams was very confusing.

The Spartans got off to a good start on a basket by Cash Renfro on a nice feed from Cody Kidd. Curtis Johnson followed with a pull-up jumper and after Max Johnson 10-footer the Spartans had a 10-5 1st quarter lead.

Turpin extended the lead to 16-8 on back to back 3-pointers from Max and Chris Workman. Little Miami went on a run of their own to trim the lead to 16-5 but Curtis Johnson took over from there scoring the last eight Spartan points for a 24-17 half time lead.

In the 2nd half is when things started to get a little chippy and the quality of play showed. Curtis 3-pointer at the 3 minute mark ended a long scoring drought for Turpin. The Spartans continued to play good defense and had a 31-23 lead after the 3rd quarter when Michael Hooper knocked down two free throws.

In the 4th quarter, Turpin struggled to get shots off and had many turnovers. Little Miami took advantage of that and cut the lead to 34-32 with a couple minutes to play. Hooper ended the long dry spell with more free throws to give Turpin some breathing room at 36-32. Turpin went on to win 38-34.

Unofficial scoring for Turpin: C. Johnson 13, Hooper 6, M. Johnson 7, Workman 5, Renfro 4, Jacobs 2, J. Moran 1
