Spartan freshman win final game on buzzer beater!

Max Johnson game winning shot

The freshman Spartans (5-9 ECC, 12-10) ended the season on a high note when Max Johnson picked up the loose ball and made a 15 foot jumper as time expired for a 39-37 win over Kings.

The first half was a grind it out game with each team playing good defense and not allowing many open looks. Ben Moran got the Spartans on the board with a jumper and Michael Hooper followed with a drive to the basket for a 6-5 lead. Turpin was playing with a lot more energy and passion than the last game to build a 9-6 lead after the 1st quarter.

The 2nd quarter saw Turpin go four minutes without scoring until Cash Renfro got an offensive rebound bucket to cut the Kings lead to 14-13. Jake Moran got the only other bucket for the Spartans as they went into the locker room down 15-13.

Both teams came out of halftime playing much better offense. Curtis Johnson knocked down a long range 3-pointer on a nice feed from Cody Kidd. The game continued to go back and forth until Chris Workman made a 3-pointer to give Turpin the lead again at 23-21. It was short lived as Kings made a desperation 3-pointer at the end the quarter to lead 24-23.

The Spartans did not let that shot affect them as Cody Kidd made his own 3-pointer from the top of the key and after Will Schlosser drove to the bucket we were all tied at 31-31. With about 20 seconds to go in the game Cash Renfro scored the go ahead bucket on a nicely designed inbounds play. Once again Kings tied the game with 2 clutch free throws with 5 seconds left. After a time out to design the last play, Turpin went deep with the in-bounds pass to Johnson. The ball was deflected but he picked up and drained the game winning shot for 39-37 win.

What a great way to end the season. It has been a pleasure to cover the team this year. They have had their ups and downs but overall they have improved and enjoyed playing together.

Unofficial scoring for Turpin: Workman 7, Renfro 6, M. Johnson 5, Hooper 4, Schlosser 4, B. Moran 4, Kidd 3, C, Johnson 3, J. Moran 2
