Spartans battle but come up short

Walker Owens hitting against Springfield

Monday evening the Spartans took on the Springfield Wildcats under the lights and both teams put on a great show.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 3 run lead. Jake Silverstein, who started the game on the mound, also led off hitting for Turpin and kept his hot bat going with a single but was left stranded on base and after the 1st inning it was 3 to 0.

In the top of the 2nd inning the Spartans gave up no runs and Jake struck out 2 batters. Drew Sesler started the bottom of the 2nd with a hit and Joe Blamer walked. Ryan Lambert then got the call to bunt and fouled off two pitches but the coach showed his confidence in the sophomore and with 2 strikes he called for another bunt and Ryan laid down a good one to move the runners and force a bad throw to first. Everyone was safe! Jake then hit a gapper to right and got 2 runs back. The score was 3 to 2 after 2 innings.

In the 3rd, Springfield got the bats out again and quickly picked up a couple more runs. Drew Sesler came in and did a nice job of forcing ground balls in the infield but the Wildcats added another run for a total of 3 for the inning. Walker Owens started off the bottom of the 3rd with a triple and Jared Breeze’s sac fly scored Walker and after 3 innings the score was 6 to 3.

In the top of the 4th, Drew, again kept the ball in the infield with 2 ground balls to Marc Gendreau at short stop and 1 to Joe Blamer at second base for put outs. JW Naughton started off the bottom of the 4th by getting hit by a pitch, followed by hits from Jake, Walker and Jared to make it 6 to 4.

In the 5th, Springfield's leadoff batter hit a line drive to Jake in center field. The next batter hit a double to right center only to be thrown out, by catcher Lucas Smith, a few pitches later, while trying to steal 3rd. After another hit and an error by the infield, the Wildcats add another run to their total.
For the Spartans, Lucas got a base knock and stole 2nd.  He was then driven in by a base hit from Jake, who also stole 2nd.  Marc then got his rbi with a hit and scored Jake.  Walker then got some deserved respect from the opposing team when they intentionally walked him after his 2 solid hits earlier in the game. Walker was stranded but the home team got 2 more back to make it 7 to 6.

Drew was throwing again in the 6th and gave up one run but recorded 2 strike outs. Lucas Smith put a batter away by snagging a pop up at the backstop fence.
With 2 outs in the bottom of the inning, the Spartans got going when Ryan reached 1st on an infield grounder. He then took 2nd on a passed ball and finally scored on a blooper to center field by Lucas. The Spartans just wouldn't go away and the inning ended with a score of 8 to 7.

Drew started the 7th on the mound and got another ground out. Jacob Devers was called on to relieve Drew and came in with 1 out and a man on 1st. Jacob came in throwing heat but faced the meat of the Wildcat lineup and they scored 2 more runs. Second baseman, Joe Blamer made a nice catch on a line drive up the middle that would have scored 2 more.

The Spartans needed 4 runs to win in the bottom of the 7th. It started out good with Jake reaching 1st after getting hit by a pitch but unfortunately, that’s as far as it went as the Wildcats retired the next three batters and won the game 10 to 7.

The Spartans may have ended up a little short on the score board but boy what a great ball game. The team battled to the very last out.
