The Spartans opened the ECC season against the Kings Knights April 4th and dropped game 1 with a score of 7 to 3.
The knights jumped out to an early 3 run lead after a couple walks and a couple of errors. The Spartans left 2 stranded in the first and that was the theme for the day as they ended up leaving 12 runners on base for the game. The Spartans out hit the Knights 11 to 8 but couldn’t get the timely hits to get runners home.
Jake Silverstein, Joe Blamer and Jared Breeze all had two hits on the day and Marc Gendreau had the defensive play of the game in the third inning with bases loaded. He made a diving catch on a hard hit line drive and then doubled up a runner to end the inning.
Game 2, played April 6th was a very cold night for baseball. Jared Breeze started on the bump and forced three ground balls to Marc at 2nd base for a quick half to inning 1. Kings then forced 3 ground outs in the bottom of the 1st.
Drew Sesler got the Spartans going with a lead off line drive to left and then Jared was hit by a pitch. Joe Blamer bunted to move the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Ryan Lambert dropped in a hit to right and scored Drew. Grayson Lambert hit a ground ball and scored another run. The Spartans went up 2 to 0.
Jared threw well and kept the Knights scoreless thru 4 innings but in the 5th, Kings got a hit and with 2 outs they tied the game with a 2 run dinger. In the bottom of the inning and with 2 outs, Marc got a hit and due to a throwing error, moved to 2nd. Walker Owens gave the Spartans the lead again with a hit to right field that scored Marc. It was 3 to 2 after 5 innings and no one scored in the 6th inning.
Turpin was leading going into the 7th inning but a walk, a hit batter and a couple hits put the Knights back on top. They held the Spartans in the bottom of the inning and won the game 4 to 3.
