The Spartans may have played their best game of the season tonight. Taking on the Wilmington Hurricane, Jared Breeze was awesome today on the mound and had a perfect game deep into the 6th inning.
It was 3 up and 3 down for 5 straight innings and it was looking good with 2 outs into the 6th inning when a Hurricane had a base hit up the middle. Jared pitched a complete game shutout and did not walk a batter, did not hit a batter and allowed only three hits.
The defense was also terrific and they put on quite a show. The outfield took away several hits from the Cane starting with Joe Blamer covering a lot of ground and running down a shallow ball in left center. Jake Silverstein took one away deep in the right center gap and finally, JW made an over the shoulder catch in deep right field to keep the chance of a perfect game alive.
The infield was equally impressive and had no errors. Walker, Marc, Matt Millikin, Drew and Grayson all had nice plays. Catcher Grayson made a diving catch on a foul pop-up near the Cane dugout. Matt, the teams good luck charm, had several put outs at 2nd base. The team is 7 and 1 with Milli in the mix.
Marc got things started for the offense in the 1st inning with a hit up the middle, then stole second. Walker followed with a hit to left and then he stole second. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Drew jumped on a first pitch fastball and scored Marc on a line drive to left center field.
In the second inning Grayson, Lucas, Marc, and Walker all were walked and Grayson scored to make it 2 to 0.
The Spartans threatened in the 4th inning when Jake walked and stole 2nd and Marc got an infield hit and also stole 2nd. They were left stranded and no one scored in the 5th.
In the 6th, Turpin added another run. Jake was hit by a pitch and Marc reached base for a 3rd time when he was walked. Walker then came to the plate and had the hit of the game when he smacked a gapper to left center and scored Jake to make it 3 to 0 after 6 innings.
In the 7th, Joe Blamer was hit by a pitch and stole 2nd. Ryan Lambert hustled down the line for an infield hit and he also stole 2nd but they were both left stranded. The Spartans held the Hurricane in the bottom of the 7th to win and move on to the 2nd round of the tournament.
The Spartans take on the La Salle Lancers next, who are the GCL South champions and have a record of 18 - 7. The game is scheduled to be at La Salle Thursday 5/12 at 5pm.
