Lady Spartans 2nd in ECC Track and Field

The Turpin girls’ varsity track and field team competed for the ECC championship in a two day meet on May 11 and 13 at the newly dedicated Andy Wolf Track at Anderson High School.

For the running events, Day One consisted primarily of qualifying heats, with the exception of a final in the 4 x 800 meter relay. The field events had both their preliminary and final rounds taking place all in this same day, leaving Turpin only a few points behind the 1st place Withrow Tigers and three other teams nipping at their heels by the end of Day One.

Day One Highlights:

· High Jump: Nicole Thomas finished 5th with a jump of 4' 10”, and Molly Finnigan took 6th at 4' 8”

· Long Jump: Nicole Thomas took 3rd place with 17' 2.25” -- a personal best jump by almost a foot. Celia Bostic had one of her best jumps of the year – 16’ 0.5” – to score in 6th place

· Pole Vault: Alexis Thacker tied her best jump -- 10' 6" – to earn 2nd place behind the current city record-holder, Lily Bunse. Anna Nolan stepped off the track after a hard run in the 800m prelim to vault 8’ and score in 7th place

· Shot Put: Lauren Steele threw her personal best -- 33' 4" – and took 2nd place, and Lindsey Dierig took 8th place in the finals with a throw of 29' 7.5”

· Discus: Mary Shetler scored by taking 5th place with a throw of 94'10

· 4 x 800m Relay: The team of Lauren Kobasuk, Anna Nolan, Isabel Shim and Sam Bush ran our fastest time this season of 9:39.89, taking 2nd behind an incredibly fast King’s team. Turpin still holds the ECC record in the 4 x 800m, however, with a time of 9:30

Friday, May 13 – Day Two of the ECC Championship meet – brought the finals in all the remaining running events. With so many schools with a shot at the championship after Day One, every race and every point was important. When the dust settled, the Lady Spartans finished in 2nd place behind Withrow, outpacing 3rd place Kings by 13 points and 4th place Loveland by more than 50.

· 800m: Isabel Shim’s personal best performance -- 2:24 – earned her a 3rd finish, and Anna Nolan took 5th with a time of 2:29.11
