The Spartans (11-3 ECC, 14-8) came up short in a bid for a sectional championship with a tough 4-1 loss to Kings. Kings scored three runs with two outs in the 5th inning to break the 1-1 tie and go on to victory. Turpin could not get the bats going like they did earlier in the week as they collected only four hits.
Earlier in the week, the Spartans defeated Little Miami 10-6 in the 1st round of the playoffs and then won over Mount Notre Dame 10-8 in a slugfest. This was the same team that had defeated the Spartans earlier in the year 10-0 but Turpin had the bats going this time around.
It was an up and down year for the Spartans as they had to battle the weather and injuries. It was hard for them to get into any kind of rhythm. However, with that said, there was a lot to be excited about. The Spartans tied for 2nd place in the conference. They had two big victories over Loveland, beat Kings once and gave Milford their toughest game in the ECC.
The Spartans will have to say good-bye to senior Madina Washburn and Mackenzie Maddy. Both have made lasting impressions on the softball program not only for their abilities but leadership and great teammates.
The future looks bright for Turpin softball as they return seven juniors, three sophomores and four freshmen to next year’s squad. Hopefully next year will be the year to jump over Kings and Milford who will continue to be strong.
