The Lady Spartans recently suffered two away game losses and needed a win at home during homecoming Saturday against the Seton Saints. The Spartans overcame a Seton halftime lead of 1-0 by scoring three goals in the second half and improving their season record to 5-5-3, ECC; 2-2-1.
Senior defender Hailey Siler was moved to the center forward position to help energize and rally an offense recently unable to finish and score. The decision paid off 15 minutes into the second half when Junior mid-fielder, Olivia Heltman, laid out a perfect pass through the middle of the Saint’s defense. Hailey did the rest of the work as she out-muscled the pesky Seton defenders and placed the ball calmly into the net for the equalizer and 1-1 tie.
The Lady Spartans found new energy and began controlling the action and offensive runs. With just under 12:00 minutes to play, Junior forward Elsie Crew found herself in a clean breakaway to the goal, surprisingly without an ‘off-sides’ flag, drove it to Seton’s goal box, and confidently placed the ball past the Saint’s goalkeeper for the Spartan’s 2-1 lead.
Senior mid-fielder, Taylor Gebhart, wanted in on the home field scoring action too. Late in the second half, the Lady Spartans earned a corner kick. The ball bounced around the Saint’s goal box; credit Junior mid-fielder Olivia Heltman with the header that bounced off the goal post right to Taylor who punched it in for the 3-1 lead and final score.
The Lady Spartan’s last regular season home game and “SENIOR DAY” is this coming Saturday, October 8, 2016, at Spartan Stadium. The Lady Spartans take on the Lakota West Firebirds. The JV Gold game is at 10:00 am, Senior Day activities are at 11:30 am, and the varsity game is at 12:00 noon.
