Spartans Fall To La Salle in 2nd Round

The Turpin Spartans ended their season with a 34-3 loss to La Salle in Round 2 of the Ohio High School Athletic Association football playoffs at Lakota West High School, finishing the season with an 11-1 record.

La Salle had played plenty of close games this season going into Friday’s Division II regional semifinal game against Turpin. Five of the Lancers’ first 11 game had been decided by one score, four of them wins, but they made sure their game against the Spartans didn’t go down to the wire.

La Salle opened up a 17-0 first-half lead on the way to a 34-3 win over previously undefeated Turpin at Lakota West. Senior Jarrel White gained 154 yards and scored teo touchdowns on 16 carries for the two-time defending state-champion Lancers, and the defense limited the Spartans to 105 yards of total offense, down from their average of 357.3 per game.

“Everybody talks about their defense, but we think we have a pretty good defense, too,” said La Salle coach Jim Hilvert, whose team had to overcome 10 penlties for 103 yards. “We had a chip on our shoulder.”

Third-seeded La Salle (10-2), ranked No. 5 in the Associated Press Division II statewide poll and first in the Enquirer’s Division II coaches’ poll, is scheduled to play fourth-seeded and unranked Miamisburg (10-2) in the Region 8 championship game next Friday at 7:30 p.m. The site still was to be determined. Miamsburg upset top-seeded and sixth-ranked Troy 28-21 on Friday. Second-seeded Turpin, ranked second in the state and second by the Enquirer, finishes 11-1. The Lancers were coming off a 23-21 first-round win over Edgewood that left them questioning themselves a bit.

“Definitely,” White said. “We came out weak, offensively and defensively. We tried to put a lot of extra effort into practice this week.”

La Salle ended a first half marred by a combined 10 penalties for 107 yard with a 20-3 lead. The Lancers converted a shanked punt that gave them the ball Turpin’s 15-yard line with senior Tre’Sean Smith’s one-yard run with 6:11 left in the first quarter. Another shanked punt following the Spartans next possession gave La Salle the ball at Turpin’s 40. White saw a 31-yard touchdown run called back by a penalty, and the Lancer had to settle for senior Paul Young’s 29-yard field goal and a 10-0 lead 48 seconds into the second quarter.

White gave La Salle a 17-0 lead with a 34-yard scoring run on a play that he carried up the middle before bouncing it around left end with 7:35 left in the first half. Turpin got past La Salle’s 40-yard line for the first time on its last possession before halftime, but the nine-play drive stalled, setting up Harry Sand’s 25-yard field goal with 2:55 left.

La Salle responded with a nine-play drive that seemed to fizzle on the eighth play when quarterback Griffin Merritt was sacked as time expired, but the officials ruled that the Lancers had called timeout in time to give Young a chance at a 33-yard field goal, which he converted. The Lancers limited Turpin to 41 yards of total offense in the first half. La Salle piled up 180 yards. White had 107 yards rushing on eight carries by halftime. White scored his second touchdown on La Salle’s first possession after halftime, using a nifty hit-and-spin move to score his eighth touchdown of the season on a 12-yard run with 8:53 left in the third quarter.

“I was just showing off a little bit,” White said about his move.

Merritt threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Christian Turner with 10:56 left in the game for a 34-3 lead that started the running clock. La Salle now is 11-for-12 over the last three years in sending playoff games to running clocks.

Meet Coach Kent McCullough

Kent McCullough became the third head football coach in the history of Turpin in 2017. He was previously the head football coach and intervention specialist at Harrison High school for six years, where he had a record of 39-26 and took the Wildcats to the state playoffs four out of his six seasons. In 2011, McCullough led the Wildcats to their first conference championship in over a decade, and was named coach of the year in the FAVC. Coach McCullough graduated from Miami University, where he was an All-American and All-MAC performer. After a brief stint in the NFL, McCullough coached and taught at a few high schools in the Dayton area before becoming a graduate assistant coach at the University of Missouri, where he earned his Master’s degree in Health Education. He and his wife Julie and son Jackson are excited to be a part of the Turpin Family and are looking forward to another outstanding season.
