Turpin opened 2017 with a home game against the Withrow Tigers, and after a routine 1st quarter, the Spartans played some solid basketball on the way to a 58-33 victory.
The 1st quarter was powered by a “Holt of lightning” – Ellie Holt that is. The sophomore guard tallied 8 of the Spartans 12 points with a 3 pointer, 3 free throws and a lay-up. Savanah Hazenfield and Charlotte Kerregan each scored a basket, but the visiting Tigers erased a 10 point deficit early as the Spartans led 12-9 at the first horn.
Turpin looked to take advantage of its height in the 2nd and Kerregan delivered on que. The senior center scored three baskets, all in the paint, after hitting a pair of free throws. Holt and Elise Schulok each had a basket, and Savanah Hazenfield drained a 3 pointer. A 15 point quarter found Turpin with a 27-19 lead at intermission.
It is unknown what Coach Hopewell said or did at halftime, but he may want to use that speech again. The Spartans held the Tigers to just 3 points the entire 3rd quarter by mixing in some zone defense and several shot blocks. Meanwhile the offense pounded out 20 points in the quarter. Kerregan and Holt added 6 and 3 points respectfully, Kaitlyn Workman added to the output with a 7 point quarter, and Lindsey Viel scored 2 baskets. Turpin found themselves with a 25 point lead going into the 4th.
The Spartans finished the night with another double digit quarter. Viel added two more baskets in the paint while Claudia Reynolds and Grace Hamilton each hit a 3 pointer from behind the arc. Turpin improves to 8-2 (5-1 ECC)
