The Spartans headed up the road to take on the Madeira Amazons in a non-conference tilt against one of the best Division III teams in the city. A back and forth game ensued but in the end Turpin fell just short in a competitive game.
The 1st quarter started well for the visiting Spartans with an inside out game paying dividends early. Kaitlyn Workman drained two jumpers from behind the arc and Charlotte Kerregan established early dominance inside with two baskets and five rebounds. Ellie Holt added 3 free throws while Elise Schulok chipped in a basket as Turpin led 15-10 after one. Turpin could only muster two baskets in the 2nd quarter as Madeira’s offense grinded out another 10 point quarter as Turpin trailed 20-19 at intermission.
Turpin regained control in the 3rd with Savanah Hazenfield hitting a pair of jumpers – one from behind the arc, an Holt added a 3 pointer as well. Baskets by Workman and Schulok rounded out the output as the Spartans led 32-31 with one quarter to play. In the 4th, the Amazons were more efficient offensively and Turpin could only muster baskets by Hazenfield and Schulok. Turpin stayed close with Workman going 4 for 4 from the free throw line, but in the end with only six players seeing court time, the Spartans grew weary and couldn’t quite grab the victory.
Scoring: Workman 12; Holt 8; Hazenfield 8; Schulok 7; Kerregan 6;
