The first game of the new Withrow gym was a JV contest between Turpin and the host Tigers. After a first quarter that finished in a 6-6 tie, the Spartans went on to outscore the Tigers 28-8 the rest of the way in route to a convincing 34-14 victory in Turpin’s final road game of the campaign.
Early on, the Spartan offense came from the inside with Corinne Nikolai and Megan Gonos hitting baskets in the paint. Nikolai drove to the rim, drew a foul and converted both free throws to round out the offense in the 1st. In the 2nd, Alice Molter heated up like a microwave draining two 3 pointers along with a short range jumper. Katelyn Randal hit a jumper from behind the arc and Ally Long scored a field goal in the paint. Nikolai went 4 of 5 from the foul line to go along with another basket as Turpin pulled ahead 26-7 at intermission.
The 3rd quarter mirrored the 1st with both teams scoring 6 points. Brielle Robinson got on the ledger with a nice offensive rebound and put back while sister, Audrey, scored on a nice drive to the rim. Nikolai added another basket in the paint as the Spartans led 26-13 going into the final quarter. In the 4th, Audrey continued to attack the basket with drives to the rim. She drew fouls going 3 of 4 from the charity stripe and she scored on a lovely bank shot. Nikolai followed Audrey’s lead and scored driving to the basket as well. Meanwhile, the defense held the Tigers to a lone point for the second time in the contest. The JV Spartans advance to 14-7 on the season.
