Seniors Say Farewell with Convincing Win Over Anderson

Turpin’s four seniors, Grace Hamilton, Charlotte Kerregan, Claudia Reynolds and Kaitlyn Workman were recognized last Saturday as large crowd at a finely decorated Klinger Court watched these four play their final home game of their careers. With all the pomp and circumstance, each were accompanied by their parents to the center court for the pregame festivities and the home crowd would leave elated as the Spartans cruised to a 49-21 win over their township rivals the Anderson Redskins.

Turpin took control early as Workman hit a jumper from behind the arc to start the 15 point first quarter. The senior point guard scored 8 in the first frame as she wanted to make certain this day would end on a high note. Savanah Hazenfield added a 3 pointer and Elise Schulok contributed a running one hander from the left block as well. Reynolds demonstrated her athleticism with a driving lay-up in traffic from the left block as the Spartans led 15-7 after the first buzzer.

In the 2nd, points were tough to come by for both teams the first few minutes of the quarter, but Workman was on a mission with a driving lay-up to go along with another 3 pointer. Meanwhile, Linsey Viel, who has shown a good run of form of late, became a presence inside the paint. The sophomore forward hit a driving lay-up before drawing 3 fouls from Anderson defenders on each of her aggressive attacks on the rim. She converted 4 of 6 from the charity strip as the Spartans led 26-11 going into the locker room for halftime.

The Spartans started the 2nd half with a mix of defense schemes that contained Anderson’s young squad, and although the Turpin offense wasn’t completely clicking, they did prevent the Redskins from getting back into the contest. Ellie Holt deposited a basket early on and added a pair of free throws, but Viel continued to cause fits for the Anderson interior defense. Lindsey found seems in the paint and drove to the tin while drawing fouls. She converted all four free throws as the Spartans led 34-18 with just one quarter to play.

Turpin finished the contest the way they started it with another 15 point quarter. Holt hit a jumper from behind the arc as Hazenfield hit a running one hander to go along with a lone free throw. Charlotte Kerregan finished her final quarter with lovely interior post move for 2 points. Workman hit two more running lay-ups before being substituted out with her classmates for the final time to the cheers of the Turpin faithful. Lastly, Brielle Robinson scored her first varsity points with a driving lay-up from the right hash in the waning seconds. Turpin defeats its township rival, 49-21 as the Spartans finish the regular season 15-7 (10-4 ECC).

Scoring: Workman 17; Viel 10; Holt 7; Hazenfield 6; Reynolds 3; Kerregan 2; Schulok 2; B. Robinson 2

Senior Day is often bittersweet as the program recognizes these four student athletes while realizing they won’t be wearing the colors again at Klinger Court. All four of these young ladies were multi-sport athletes for Turpin and throughout their high school careers, they represented their school and their community with honor, distinction and class. We are all grateful we crossed paths even though just for a few years. Fair thee well, ladies.
