Spartans lose tight game to Anderson 36-34

On Friday, February 17 in a sweltering Anderson gym, the Turpin Spartans (6-16, 4-10 ECC) fell to the Anderson Redskins (10-12, 6-8 ECC) 36-34.

Despite shooting 27% from the field, 21% from the three point line, and getting outrebounded 36-22 the Spartans were able to hang in and had chances at the end to tie or win the game.  Turpin jumped out to a 7-2 lead thanks to two Drew Sesler free throws, a basket then a three pointer by Nick Haddad.   The Redskins were able to tie the game at 7-7, but Haddad hit another three.  Anderson scored, but the Spartans took a 10-9 lead into the second quarter.  The second quarter saw the Redskins take a 19-12 lead into halftime as Turpin was limited to a Curtis Johnson basket.

The Spartans made a concerted effort to attack the basket in the second half.  Jack Tyszkiewicz and Sesler were both fouled underneath and made a free throw each to close the deficit to 19-14.  After a Redskin basket, Tyszkiewicz made another free throw to make the score 21-15.   The Redskins dropped in a three to grow their lead to nine at 24-15, but Sesler made a free throw then hit a three to get the Spartans within five at 24-19.   The Redskins made a free throw, but Haddad answered with a basket to cut the deficit to four.  Anderson scored again, then Haddad made a free throw to make the score 27-22 going into the fourth quarter.  Ben Hemmelgarn started the fourth quarter with two free throws to get the Spartans within three.  The Redskins answered with a hoop, but Tyszkiewicz scored then Hemmelgarn drained a jumper to pull the Spartans within one at 29-28.  Tyzkiewicz then knocked down a free throw to deadlock the game at 29-29 with 4:14 remaining.  Anderson went up by three with a free throw and basket, but Sesler  made a three with 1:42 remaining to tie the game at 32-32.  The Redskins scored a basket, then made a free throw at the 59 second mark to take a 35-32 lead.  Tyskiewicz scored with 42 seconds left to pull Turpin within one.  At the 15 second mark the Redskins made a free throw, but the Spartans were unable to answer and Anderson held on to win 36-34.  It was their second two point win against Turpin this season.   The Spartans were led in scoring by Haddad with 11 points (two three pointers), followed by Sesler with 10 (two threes), Tyszkiewicz with seven, Hemmelgarn four and Johnson two.  With the regular season complete, the Spartans now look to continue their season in the Sectionals.  They take on Princeton on Thursday, February 23 at Hamilton High School.  Tip off is 8:00 pm.
