Spartans sweep series from Loveland in ECC opener

The Spartans (2-0 ECC, 4-3) bounced back after a tough non-conference weekend in which the bats went silent defeating Loveland 13-3 and 4-3 in their conference opener.

In the 1st game of the series at Loveland, Turpin jumped out to an early 1-0 after Kaitlyn Workman walked and Sarah Yarocki knocked her in with a line drive up the middle. The teams went back and forth the next few innings for a 2-2 tie but the Spartans got their bats going in the 4th to score five runs. Sarah Wilke got the scoring started with a RBI single to center to score Maddy Young who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. The big blow of the inning was a line drive 3-run homer from Dana Bausch to right center field to score Molly Case and Wilke to give Turpin a 7-2 lead.

The next issue became the rain and darkness. Even with a wet ball and muddy outfield, both teams wanted to try and get the required five innings in for a full game. Turpin had another big inning in the 5th to build a 13-3 advantage. The Spartans collected 4 hits and 3 walks that inning to plate the 6 runs. Turpin now had the run limit but needed to shut Loveland down as the sun started to appear. With two outs and a runner on 3rd, Sandi Malone hustled to a ball on a wild pitch and threw the runner out to end the game.

Izzy Helm got the win with a solid 5 innings allowing only 6 hits and 3 runs in less than ideal conditions. Bausch had a great day at the plate with 2 hits and 5 RBIs.

In the 2nd game, Turpin had to rally for a 4-3 victory. It is amazing how things can change so quickly in softball. Everyone knew coming in that Loveland had the bats but were not sure about their pitching. Loveland went with a new pitcher who threw all off-speed and it worked out great for them. She retired 12 of the first 13 batters with only Sarah Yarocki reaching because of miscommunication from the outfielders on a pop fly. Turpin batters were all swinging at the 1st pitch and hitting soft ground balls.

Izzy Helm was also matching the Loveland pitcher as the game was 0-0 after the 4th inning. With the storms coming you got the feeling that 1st team to score was going to win since it did not feel like we were going to play 7 innings. Loveland got on the board first with a three run 5th. It could have been worse with the heart of the order up and less than one out but Izzy Helm got Maggie Bailey to ground out and then a strike out leaving two on.

Turpin finally got their 1st hit of the game with a single to center by Helm. Dana Bausch scored on a RBI ground out by Sandi Malone to cut the lead to 3-1. Turpin then tied the game up in the six without a hit when things got wild. Kaitlyn Workman was hit by a pitch and Sarah Wilke reached on an error and both scored on steals and wild throws.

In the bottom of the 7th inning, Madison Saylor led off the inning with a single. After Malone was hit by a pitch and Kylee Remo had a bunt single to load the bases loaded, Workman delivered a single to right field for the win. It was not a pretty win but a win is a win.
