Turpin Men’s Tennis (@TurpinMTennis) is off to a good start in its 2017 quest for a fourth straight ECC title. The Spartans topped ECC rival Milford, 5-0, in the first match of the season at Turpin High School on April 4th.
Turpin, led by Coach Kate Rodgers, has won the Eastern Cincinnati Conference championship title each year since 2014. Getting the four-peat this year will be no easy task. There are no easy “outs” in the conference, and the Spartans look for battles with cross-district rival Anderson and Walnut Hills. Turpin is ranked fourth in the current City of Cincinnati Coaches’ Poll, followed closely by Anderson (5) and Walnut Hills (6).
Versus Milford, Junior First Singles Grant Wendel grabbed the first point for the Spartans, winning 6-0-, 6-0. Senior Will Muscatello added the second point at Third Singles, taking his match 6-1, 6-1. Spartan Junior Ethan Caruso then secured the Turpin win with a victory at Second Singles, 6-1, 6-2.
Doubles was not to be outdone. First Doubles teammates Senior Michael Borger and Sophomore Patrick Wantz won 6-2, 6-2, and the Second Doubles duo of Junior Jake Kovach and Freshman McCoy Reynolds completed the sweep, 6-4, 6-4.
The Spartans have played two non-conference dual matches as well. Turpin dropped a close match to Mason-B on April 5th, 3-2. Winning for the Spartans were Wendel at First Singles, 6-4, 6-4 over Mason’s Vishnu Srinath, and Muscatello at Third Singles, 6-3, 7-6(6) over the Comet’s Arnav Divrar.
On April 8th, the Celtics of Dublin Jerome from Columbus traveled to Turpin High School for a Spring Break match, topping the Spartans 4-1. Wendel took his match at First Singles, 6-0, 6-2, over Dublin Jerome’s Noah Schneider. Caruso rallied back to force a third set at Second Singles, only to fall in a close tiebreaker, 10-8. Wantz lost a close match at Third Singles, and Junior Jack Speelman and Freshman Cody Seeman fell in their first varsity action of the season as First Doubles partners.
The Spartans travel to Anderson High School for another ECC battle on Tuesday, April 18th at 3:30 p.m. The Junior Varsity Team led by coach Matthew Chaney host the JV Redskins at the same time.
The JV registered a win on April 17th versus ECC rival Loveland, 3-2. Winning for the Spartans were Sophomore David Thomas (Ct 1), 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, Freshman Preston Rhodes (Ct 2), 6-3, 7-5, and Sam Hammelrath and Reed Owens (Doubles Ct 2), 2-6, 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Logan Chavez (Ct 3) lost a tight three-setter, and the Court 1 Doubles duo of Freshmen Cody Seeman and Zach Zellner lost to a strong Loveland team.
