The Varsity Spartans of Turpin Men’s Tennis (@TurpinMTennis) topped four conference rivals this week in dual matches, completing the ECC regular season undefeated. Finishing 6-0 in the ECC, the Spartans beat Kings, Glen Este, and Walnut Hills to start the week, and completed the sweep with a win against Loveland on Friday.
The Spartans are led by First Singles Junior Grant Wendel, Second Singles Junior Ethan Caruso, and Third Singles Senior Will Muscatello. Going a combined 18-0 in ECC play, the trio has been unstoppable.
On Monday, versus the Knights of Kings, the Spartans won 4-1, on the strength of Singles and a First Doubles win for Senior Michael Borger and Sophomore Patrick Wantz in three sets.
On Tuesday, in a battle between Trojans and Spartans, Turpin prevailed over Glen Este, 5-0. Adding a win for the Spartans at Second Doubles was Junior Jake Kovach and Freshman McCoy Reynolds.
On Wednesday, the Spartans’ singles players swept the Eagles of Walnut Hills, and the Spartans won 3-2.
And finally, on Friday, the Spartans traveled to Loveland to face the Tigers for a chance to go undefeated in conference play. Wendel closed his match out first, winning 6-0, 6-0. Muscatello was next, finishing 6-1, 6-1. Caruso secured the victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Doubles was suspended due to rain after one set, and the Spartans took the match, 3-0, and the undefeated record.
Loveland finishes the regular season no worse than second place at 4-2. Anderson and Walnut Hills each stand at 3-2, with a match scheduled for Monday. Milford finished the season at 3-3.
Having reached the “half way” point toward an outright conference championship, Coach Kate Rodgers’ Spartans will compete on Tuesday in the ECC Tournament.
The Junior Varsity Team led by Coach Matthew Chaney also completed an outstanding ECC regular season at 5-1. They fell one match shy of an undefeated ECC season, losing to Walnut Hills, 3-2.
