The Spartans got several clutch performances late to come back from a 3-0 deficit to surprise the Tigers 4-3 on Thursday. Turpin got six innings of solid pitching from Drew Sesler, great defense from center fielder Jake Silverstein, and two hits each from Justin Silverstein, Ryan Lambert and Will Blamer. Lambert was credited with the win and Matt Millikin provided the two-out game winning hit in the bottom of the seventh.
Loveland put two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Sesler battled on the mound and Jake Silverstein tracked down several fly balls in the left center field gap to keep the game within reach. The Tigers put another run on the board in the fifth inning to make it 3-0. Turpin has made it a habit to score multiple runs with two outs in the fifth inning this season and this game was no different. JW Naughton was at first base on a fielder’s choice when Jake Silverstein and Marc Gendreau walked to fill the bases. Justin Silverstein followed with a 2RBI double down the left field line to tighten the game up at 3-2. Lucas Smith got on base in the sixth inning due to an error. Millikin moved Smith into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Sesler’s RBI single to right center field scored Smith and tied it up 3-3 heading into the final frame.
Noah Wagner came on to pitch for the Spartan’s and recorded two outs. Lambert came in to pitch with the bases loaded and came up with a clutch strikeout on a 3-2 count. With Justin Silverstein on first base, Lambert provided a two out single and Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Millikin lined a clutch RBI single up the middle for the final score of 4-3.
