Spartans extend win streak with 9-3 over rival Anderson

The Spartans (9-4 ECC, 12-11) extended their win streak to six with a solid come from behind 9-3 victory over Anderson. Before the game, Anderson extended an incredible gesture on their senior day by recognizing Turpin’s seniors with flowers and a small gift. What was even more special about the gesture is Anderson did not even have a single senior.

It has been an interesting year for the Spartan’s softball team hitting a very hard stretch in the middle of the year losing eight of nine games against some very tough Myrtle Beach competition and the two front runners of the ECC Kings and Milford. In almost all of the games Turpin has battled and lost a couple heart breakers. Instead of getting discouraged (even after losing leading hitting Dana Bausch for the year to injury) the Spartans have bounced back to win six in a row in the ECC to move to 3rd place with one game remaining.

After Anderson got off to a 1-0 lead, Maddy Young got the 3rd inning started with a slap hit to reach first. Kaitlyn Workman then walked and Sarah Wilke laid down a perfect sacrifice to move the runners over. Sarah Yarocki delivered a clutch two out double to right center to give Turpin a 2-1 lead.

The Spartans then had another strong inning in the 5th and 6th scoring three runs each inning to extend the lead to 9-2. Workman led off the 5th with a bunt single. With two outs and two on, the Spartans got more timely two out hits from Madison Saylor and Molly Case to plate two runners. Kylee Remo drew a walk to score Saylor to extend the lead to 6-2. The three runs in the 6th also all came with two outs. Saylor delivered a double to score Katelyn Wessling (running for Izzy Helm) and Yarocki. Saylor also came around to score on the play as the throw to third went out of bounds.

The Redskins would not go away as they threated in the bottom of the six. Anderson put together three hits and a walk to cut the lead to 9-3 with only one out and basis loaded but Helm got the next two hitters to fly out and ground out to keep the lead. Helm had an easy 7th inning to help give the Spartans the 9-3 win.

As a side note, I saw one of the most bizarre plays ever. Sandi Malone took a line drive off of her hand at 3rd base in the 5th inning that ricocheted to Madison Saylor at short for the out. Luckily Sandi was O.K. Sandi had a rough day to her body as she was hit in the shoulder by a pitch in the previous inning.
