Turpin Tennis ECC Four-Peat Complete

The Varsity Spartans of Turpin Men’s Tennis (@TurpinMTennis) added a fourth consecutive ECC Championship to their collective resume. Coach Kate Rodgers’ squad added a first-place finish in the league tournament on Tuesday to an undefeated regular season league record, to complete the four-peat.

The Spartans swept all three Singles Titles at the Lindner Tennis Center at Lunken Airport, and both doubles pairings added essential points to secure the tournament win. Turpin finished with the maximum 18 points in the overall Championship race. Walnut Hills finished in second place with 13.5 points, and Milford claimed third place with 10.5 points. Anderson and Loveland tied for fourth position with 9.5 points, followed by Kings and Glen Este.

First Singles Junior Grant Wendel, Second Singles Junior Ethan Caruso, and Third Singles Senior Will Muscatello each claimed a Singles Title in their respective division. First Doubles partners Senior Michael Borger and Sophomore Patrick Wantz claimed fourth place. The Second Doubles pairing of Junior Jake Kovach and Freshman McCoy Reynolds finished in sixth position.

Wendel faced Milford Junior Holden Owens in the First Singles Semifinals, winning 6-0, 6-1. He then faced cross-district rival Junior Will Sultan of Anderson in the Final. The first set was close, with a break of serve being the difference in favor of Wendel, 6-4. Wendel picked it up a notch in the second set, closing it out 6-0.

Caruso beat Michael Feagins of Anderson, 6-1, 6-0 in the Second Singles Semifinals. He then won the Final in straight sets over Ben Mason of Anderson.

Muscatello beat Jeremy Mussari of Kings in the Third Singles Semifinals. He claimed the title with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Levar Pharris of Walnut Hills.

Borger and Wantz dropped the first set of their opening round match against Edwards and Lockwood of Kings, but dug deep and won the match in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Finishing in fourth position, Borger and Wantz picked up 5 points toward the tournament title.

Kovach and Reynolds added a critical 3 points with a win against Glen Este at Second Doubles. Those points ended up making the difference in the tournament as the Spartans finished with 35 points to second place Walnut Hills’ 33 points.

Earlier in the week, the Spartans faced local rival Indian Hill in a non-conference matchup which proved to be good preparation for the ECC Tournament. Indian Hill came out on top 3-2, but Wendel and Caruso picked up wins at First Singles and Second Singles, respectively. Wendel beat Junior Andrew Pregel, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0(4), and Caruso topped Christiano Lima, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4.

The Spartans face St. Xavier on Thursday in further preparation for the start of the Division I Cincinnati Sectional Tournament next week.
