Turpin shut out Edgewood 7-0 Wednesday in the first round of the OHSAA state baseball playoffs in Trenton. Jake Silverstein pitched a complete game 3 hitter with 7 strikeouts and was bolstered by two inning-ending double plays in the third and fifth innings by the Spartans defense. Drew Sesler went 3-3 with a double and Jake Silverstein went 2-3 with a triple. Justin Silverstein and Matt Millikin also collected two hits apiece.
This first round playoff game was a real pitcher’s duel until the final inning. The only run Turpin was able to score was in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Jake Silverstein singled to center. Marc Gendreau and Drew Sesler walked to load the bases. Silverstein scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 Spartans.
The Spartans’ bats came alive in the top of the seventh. Jake Silverstein led off with a triple to left center field. With one out, Justin Silverstein fought off a pitch which landed just over the second baseman to score pinch runner Andrew Witt and made it 2-0. Sesler singled and Lucas Smith got on with a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Matt Millikin singled up the middle to score Justin Silverstein. Will Blamer reached on a fielder’s choice which scored Sesler. Woody Rosebraugh and JW Naughton walked which scored Smith and Millikin. Jake Silverstein followed with a sacrifice fly which scored Blamer and the final of 7-0.
The second round game will be Thursday, May 11 @ St. Xavier at 5:00pm.
