JV Gold Loses to Loveland Tigers in Lopsided Conference Match

Taylor Black controls against Loveland

An auspicious beginning versus conference foe Loveland turned disheartening on Tuesday evening at Spartan Stadium.

It was a beautiful afternoon for the beautiful game, and in the opening minutes of the match Turpin began showing all the promise that they'd been hinting at lately. The Spartans moved the ball quickly, working the ball from the flanks to the middle and back again. The Loveland Tigers were forced to chase in their defensive half, as Ella Tierney repeatedly found the end line on the right side and sent the ball in. With no one home, though, the Spartans couldn't capitalize.

Less than ten minutes in, Loveland appeared to settle and began to return the favor. One of the Tigers' first forays into Turpin's defensive third struck pay dirt as their winger drove down the flank and found a loose striker in the middle for the score.

Undaunted, the Spartans soon equalized as a defensive steal was sent weak side and Tierney once again found joy down the flank. Her cross found Victoria King unmarked in the goal box, and King notched one off the top post for the home side.

The two teams traded possession for a time, neither team holding for long. Eventually, Loveland broke through again, netting a spectacular one-touch header on a corner kick to the center of the penalty box.

The half ended with the Tigers leading 2-1.

The second half began as optimistically as the first, with the Spartans trying hard to execute the possession-style game they are working toward. Turpin couldn't quite find their touch in the final third, though, and the Tigers' backline was steady, always in the right place at the right time to win the ball and distribute up top.

While the Spartans showed spurts of passing and moments of gritty defensive play, they couldn't mount a sustained offensive effort.

Meanwhile, Loveland put away three more goals, including another good-looking header off of a corner kick.

After three days of rest, JV Gold meets the McNicholas Rockets at Spartan Stadium on Saturday, where they will look to put an end to their two game skid. Their record stands at 2-3-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in conference play.
