Spartan Nation came out in force on Thursday night to celebrate Senior co-captains Madi Hicks and Lisa Brueggemeier, and were treated to three Spartan victories over the Redskins!
The Freshmen got the momentum and the crowd going with an exciting three set victory. After dropping the first set, they battled back to take the tight match in three: 22-25, 25-19, 25-22. The JV kept things going with an impressive victory of their own, defeating the Redskins: 25-21, 19-25, 25-19 to finish the season undefeated in the ECC.
Maybe it was the misty-eyed pregame festivities for the Spartans, or maybe it was the bad taste in Anderson’s mouth from losing 7 consecutive matches to Turpin, but Anderson jumped on the Spartans early and rushed out to an 11-19 lead. It looked like we were in for another long back & forth battle against the Redskins.
I’m not sure what happened in the Spartan huddle during that timeout, but they came to life, stormed back to take the first set 25-23, and never looked back. From that point forward, it was almost all Spartans, as the Varsity capped-off the night by knocking off Anderson in straight sets: 25-23, 25-19, 25-22. With the win, the Spartans claimed solo 2nd place in the ECC, edging Anderson by a game in the standings.
Senior Lisa Brueggemeier led the Spartans from the service line with 19 serves, the final few to the thunderous chants of the hometown crowd, “Lisa! Lisa! Lisa!!” Lisa also added 11 digs and an ace to send the hometown fans home happy. Lisa’s career has included two years on the Varsity, where she helped the Spartans to an ECC record of 24-4, including 1 ECC championships and 1 runner-up 2nd place finish.
Senior Madi Hicks played the final home game of her 4-year Varsity career, and led the team with 10 kills. Madi also delivered 11 digs and an ace. During her 4-year career, Madi’s teams compiled an impressive 50-6 record in ECC play, including 3 conference championships and 1 runner-up 2nd place finish. Maybe just as impressive, Madi finished her career a perfect 8-0 v Anderson!
CONGRATULATIONS to Madi and Lisa on the great careers they’ve had until this point, and best of luck as they lead the Spartans into the playoffs this Tuesday night, 6:30 at Sycamore against Western Brown.
