With 3 games in the first six days of the season, the Turpin Spartans had a tough beginning to their first road game of the year at Loveland. The hosts used a trapping half court man to man defense to jump out to an early lead that could not be overcome by visiting Spartans. Turpin suffered their first loss of the year, 39-27.
Turpin fell behind 8-0 to start the game as the aggressive half-court defense by the Tigers was working. As a result, the Spartans appeared disjointed on offense especially in the opening quarter. Ellie Holt finally started the scoring for the Spartans with a lay-up, but after the first horn, the Spartans were trailing 13-3. Turpin opened the 2nd quarter with a mini 6-0 run. Corinne Nikolai hit a 3 point jumper from the left arc and Savanah Hazenfield followed suit with a 3 pointer of her own. Elise Schulok scored a lay-up on an inbounds play as Turpin had halved the Tigers opening quarter lead to only trail, 16-11. However, the Tigers finished the quarter with their own 8-2 run with an Olivia Hamilton lay-up finishing the half scoring for Turpin.
Unfortunately, the 3rd quarter resembled the 1st as the lack of offense appeared to rattle the Spartans. Hazenfield scored a lay-up, then Nikolai got fouled on put back attempt from an offensive rebound. She sank both free throws which was it for the scoring in the quarter. The defense did their best by holding the Tigers to just 8 points in the quarter, but the Loveland lead expanded to a 32-17 score going into the final frame.
Hazenfield, who was tightly marked all game, started to heat up in the 4th. She drained a 3 pointer from the top of arc and was fouled in the process. The ensuing free throw just rimmed out. Later she converted a lay-up then had a steal then dribbled the length of the court for 2 more. Audrey Robinson worked hard for an offensive rebound and got the put back field goal which rounded out the scoring. In the end, the Spartans couldn’t make up the early deficit - falling to the Tigers, 39-27.
Scoring: Hazenfield 12; Nikolai 5; Holt 4; Schulok 2; Hamilton 2; A. Robinson 2
