In their final game before winter break, the Freshman Boys Basketball Team travelled to Schroder HS looking to extend their winning streak to 3 games. The Spartans (3-4 overall, 2-1 ECC) came away with an impressive 68-16 victory over the Jaguars.
In this one, Turpin started fast and never looked back. Charlie Goldey started the scoring off for Turpin, on his way to a game-high 17 points. The Spartan high pressure defense forced several turnovers early, wich guard Matthew Johnson turned into 4 points and before the crowd had settled in, the Spartans were on top 8-0. Shroder quickly fought back with a transition basket followed by a long 3-pointer to cut the lead to 10-5. That's as close as it would get for them. Turpin closed the first quarter on a 10-1 run, and led 20-6 powered by Johnson's 6 points and 4 each from Ethan Zinn and Alex Steele.
In the second quarter, things continued to go all Turpin's way. Max Gundrum ignited the scoreboard for 5 quick points, including a long 3 ball. The defense was stiffling, holding the Jags to only 2 points in the quarter. Heading to the lockerroom at halftime, Turpin held a 38-8 advantage. In the second half, the Spartans continued to roll on offense, soring from inside the paint and with the deep shot. Starting late in the 3rd quarter, Goldey put on a show for the visiting fans with a steal and layup, followed minutes later by consecutive 3 pointers. After the 3rd quarter Turpin led 53-12, and they continued strong in the 4th, rolling to the final score of 68-16.
Up next, the Spartans look to make it 4-in-a-row against the Milford Eagles Tuesday, January 3rd at home.
