Spartans Roll Over Withrow

Turpin traveled to Hyde Park to play the Withrow Tigers in the first game of the new year, and the well-rested Spartans displayed a balanced offensive game by scoring in double figures all four quarters in route to a 25-point victory to improve to 7-4 overall (3-3 ECC).

After the hosts jumped out to a 3-0 lead, the Spartans answered with a 12-1 run to finish up the opening quarter. Ellie Holt opened the visitors account with a 3-point jumper from the right arc. A minute later, Olivia Hamilton scored a runner from the right side of the lane to put Turpin up 5-3. After a defensive stop, Corinne Nikolai drained a 3-pointer from the right corner and Spartans began to ignite. Savanna Hazenfield stole the ball and went the length of the court for a lay-up putting the Spartans up 10-4. Holt went inside, grabbed an offensive, and was fouled on the put back attempt. She calmly sank both free throws. Turpin led 12-4 after the 1st.

With the Spartans holding the hosts to just one field goal in the 1st, they went on to deny the Tigers any points in the 2nd quarter. Meanwhile, the solid Turpin defense created offense contributing to the Spartans 12-0 2nd quarter run. Lindsey Viel was the recipient of a fine assist from Elise Schulok to open the scoring in the quarter, then Hazenfield enjoyed a “shooters bounce” on her baseline 3 pointer sending the visitors to a 17-4 advantage. Next, Hazenfield offered up a delicious pass to Hamilton for the sophomore’s second basket of the evening. The last minute of the half saw Holt drain her second 3-pointer and then record a steal to go coast to coast for the lay-up. Turpin was in command 26-4 at intermission.

The 3rd quarter was dominated by guard play as the Spartans created turnovers against the quick and scrappy Tiger’s team. Hazenfield got the half going with baseline dribble drive resulting in a short jump shot for two. After a bench technical against the Tigers, Holt converted both ensuing free throws. Then, she stole the ball and went the length of the court for a lay-up to up the Turpin lead to 32-7. Hazenfield copied Holt with a coast to coast lay-up of her own before Holt closed out the quarter with jump shot basket in the lane. Turpin led 36-10 going into the final quarter.

In the 4th, Nikolai scored on a clinical post move in the paint before Holt scored next two baskets on a jumper and a lay-up. Viel wrangled free in the lane and scored on a power move for another basket. Turpin led by 25 with 1:30 remaining as Brooke Painter recorded her first varsity points with a lovely one-handed drive across the lane. The Spartans open the year in fine fashion leading up to rivalry Saturday: Turpin hosts Anderson 2:00pm Saturday, January 6th.

Scoring: Holt 20; Hazenfield 10; Hamilton 6; Nikolai 5, Viel 4; Painter 2
