The Freshman Spartans Boys Basketball Team brought in the new year in much the same way they ended the old one, with a dominant victory! On Tuesday, January 2nd, the Spartans (4-4 overall, 3-1 ECC) faced off against the Milford Eagles at THS and ran their winning streak to 4 games with a 62-28 victory. Since starting the season 0-4, the young Spartans have strung together victories of 28 pts, 15 pts, 52 pts, and 34 pts. It appears that Coach Mitch Johnson’s club is clicking on all cylinders right now.
Key components in this winning streak have been fast starts offensively, tenacious defense, and balanced scoring. On Tuesday the Spartans quickly showed there would be no rust after the 2 week layoff, racing out to an 18-5 first quarter advantage. Ethan Zinn fueled the fast start with 7 points, while Kaiden Naughton chipped in 5, and Jack Cnota added 4. Zinn and Naughton combined to go 6 of 8 from the free throw line in the early going as Turpin quickly beat the Milford press and took the ball strong to the basket. The second quarter put on display Turpin’s balanced scoring attack. Six Spartans scored in the quarter, led by Cnota and Charlie Goldey with 3 each. Turpin went into halftime with a 31-13 advantage. The third quarter saw another 18 point offensive barrage from Turpin as they extended their lead to 49-20. Our Spartans continued excellent ball movement and tight defense through the final period on their way to the 62-28 victory.
Next up, the Spartans look to extend their streak to 5 games as they travel to Kings High School on Friday night to take on the Knights.
