The brutally cold weather appeared to infiltrate the Turpin offense as the Spartans hosted their township adversaries the Anderson Redskins, and Turpin found itself on the bad end of the result this time. Turpin (7-5, 3-4 ECC) started poorly and could not take advantage of their height and strength advantage over the young and up and coming Redskins. Although the Spartans rallied late, they could not overcome the significant 1st half deficit as they fell to the visitors 41-33 in front of a lively and sizeable crowd at Klinger Court.
The visitors were well schooled and prepared for the Spartan attack as the hosts struggled running their offense. Olivia Hamilton finally got the Spartans on the board with a lay-up five minutes into the quarter. The visitors jumped at the opportunity and led 9-2 with less than a minute left, but Ellie Holt hit a 3-point jumper to carve into the deficit before the first horn. Even though it was one of several recent games in which Turpin was slow out of the gates, the hosts only trailed 9-5 as they huddled in between quarters.
The Spartans lack of creativity and production offensively was more than enough of an opening for the Redskins to take command of the game. The visitors got hot from behind the arc and opened the 2nd quarter with a 12-0 run. A lone Holt free throw preceded the only basket of the quarter for the home team. Savanna Hazenfield stole the ball took it the length of the court for a lay-up, but the damage was done. Turpin trailed 24-8 at halftime.
To open the 3rd, the Spartans changed up their defense and it immediately paid dividends as a full court press spearheaded by Elise Schulok on point started to change the momentum. After a Holt 3 pointer cut the Anderson lead to 29-13, Schulok buried a 3 pointer from left side. On the ensuing inbounds, Schulok stole the ball and fed Lindsey Viel who was fouled on her shot attempt. Another Schulok inbounds steal for a lay-up cut the Redskins lead to 31-20. Schulok continued with another 3-pointer from the baseline which cut the lead to 8 with less than a minute to play in the 3rd. However, the pace started to take its toll as the Turpin starters played 7 of the 8 minutes of the 3rd before the bench was employed. Hazenfield awakened the crowd by hitting a 3 pointer at the 3rd quarter buzzer as the hosts cut a 19-point deficit down to 7 with the final quarter looming.
The 18-point 3rd quarter for the Spartans came at a price as the team couldn’t muster the energy to continue its defensive pressure. Viel hit a short-range baseline jumper followed by another Hazenfield 3 pointer, but the deficit was still 7. After Holt converted a pair of free throws to cut the Redskin lead to five, 38-33, the offense was no more as the Spartans were held scoreless the last 4:30 of the game. This stat will haunt Turpin since fouling to stop the clock, the Redskins only shot 27% from the charity stripe, but the Spartans couldn’t quite finish the comeback.
Scoring: Holt 13; Hazenfield 8; Schulok 8; Hamilton 2; Viel 2
