The Turpin Gymnastics got a Saturday off, but they were back at it again on Sunday. They traveled to the Oak Hills Cross Town Flip Off. It had been a rough week and the Spartans were hoping for this meet to get them out of the dumps, and it sure did!
Three “Guppies”, meaning they have never competed in a high school meet before, competed for the first time! Freshmen Delilah Folk and Sarah Driscol and sophomore Ally Mayne. All three of them are now officially Goldfish.
The Spartans started on floor, and they left it all out there! The main focus of the team has been presenting and getting into their floor routines. All around all six girls had their chins up, smiling and shook their stuff. Lena Bercz scored a 9.05, which was second place overall at the meet. Amber Russell had a career-high with an 8.95 and finished third overall. Delilah Folk had a 8.625. Sophomore Serra Tuzun earned an 8.45.
Next, they traveled to vault. Everyone was in a fabulous mood after their stellar performances on floor. Senior Lena Bercz flipped for the first time at a high school meet earning herself a 9.05 and third place overall. Delilah, Serra and Leah Roodhouse also competed on vault.
Keeping their spirits up they continued onto the uneven bars. Even though the bars were difficult to change to different settings the Spartans were still excited to show their bar skills! Senior Lena Bercz led again with an 8.9 and finished first overall. Seniors Gretchen Watkins, Tiffany Russell and Sophomore Olivia Meagher added to the team score. Junior Maria Bushman competed for the first time in her three years of high school gymnastics on the uneven bars.
The beam was a tough one this meet, but the Spartans conquered it anyways. Lena finished third overall. Gretchen, Serra, and Amber also defeated the unruly beam at the meet.
Overall the team score improved by 6 points, which means they scored a 131. The Spartans finished in second place! Lena finished first place in all-around with a 35.6. Serra Tuzun the only other one to compete all-around scored a high 31.
Next meet is Monday, Martin Luther King Junior Day at the Troy Invitational, hope to see you all there!
