Spartans kick off Ohio HS football season Aug. 26

The Reds open the official baseball season, and now the Turpin Spartans football team will have the honor of playing the first football game in Ohio for the 2010 season when they take on the Loveland Tigers in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown at 5:30pm on Thursday, August 26 at Mason High School's Atrium Stadium.

The Spartans are coming off a Division III Regional Championship Game appearance and an undefeated regular season. Turpin has made four consecutive trips to the Ohio football playoffs, and own an incredible 45-5 record during the regular season under coach Rob Stoll.

The Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown is the largest and longest running event of its kind in the United States. The season-opening high school football showcase, which first kicked off in 1998, was designed to provide a center stage for the premier programs in Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky.

And what a stage it has provided, as more than a quarter million fans in the region have gathered each August to watch their favorite teams participate.

The Skyline Crosstown Showdown is now considered an integral part of the Cincinnati sports fabric, so much so that some of the more ardent fans will even adjust their schedules to ensure they don't miss the Showdown. Literally. In 2002, St. Xavier fan Amy Scheidt planned her parent's 50-year wedding anniversary celebration around the Showdown so that no one in the family would miss the Bombers' hard-fought 10-7 victory over Sycamore!

The reason for such passion is the strength of Cincinnati's communities. Of course, the quality of football being played doesn't hurt either.

Cincinnati teams are among the best there is each year, without exception. And the list of Showdown alums now in the NFL has reached double digits.

Every year, too, a new story is born in the Showdown. Last year it was Winton Woods' near upset of Moeller, a loss that Warriors coach Troy Everhart later said was the catalyst to the school winning its first state football title.
