A wise old hunter once told me that in Africa in order to catch a lion you need to patient, clever and most of all, lucky. The Spartans caught the Little Miami Panthers on Monday, but on Thursday it was the Ursuline Academy (UA) Lions who came a calling to Klinger Court. Although both teams struggled to score, and defense dominated the game, Turpin, found a way to force overtime. It took two extra periods, but the Spartans prevailed 42-30.
The Turpin Spartans hosted the Little Miami Panthers in the opener of the 2017-18 basketball season. Although Turpin started the game tentatively, the squad, loaded with upper classman, erased a 9 point first quarter deficit by outscoring the Panthers 40-29 in the final three quarters for a 45-42 victory.
For the second time in 3 years, the Turpin Spartans earned a place in the sectional finals in the Division 1 basketball tournament. Last evenings opponent, the #2 seed Mason Comets, were also the ranked 5th in the state going into the postseason. However, the Spartans were not intimidated and dominated the first half, but Mason rallied after the intermission to escape the Spartans upset bid, 37-34.
In the second round of the sectional tournament, Turpin faced the Fairfield Indians of the GMC and after an evenly played 1st quarter, the Spartan defense completely took control of the game by yielding only 4 points in each of the next two quarters on the way to solid 45-30 victory and a trip to the sectional finals next Tuesday.
