The Turpin Athletic Quiz Team won the Miami University Tournament on Saturday, beating Lakota in the finals after having to go into overtime in the semifinals.
The Spartans won three of their four matches in the opening rounds, placing them as the third seed in elimination rounds. After beating Colerain, Turpin looked to a rematch with Oak Hills in the second round. The Spartans led by just a couple points for most of the match, but lost some ground during the Lightening Round and the match ended with a tie and moved to overtime.
In the 5 overtime questions, Turpin got 2 and Oak Hills got 1 to pull out the win and head to the finals against Lakota, which was already 5-0. The Spartans jumped ahead and never looked back on their way to the championship.
“The semifinal overtime was a very fun match to win but, as coach, it was the most tense and stressful moment of the entire season,” said Coach Adam Bridges.
This championship gives Turpin's varsity team a spot in regional competition coming up after the regular season is over.
The Spartans are 6-2 in FAVC action after sweeping Kings last week, vaulting them into second place in the conference standings. Turpin heads north to Wilmington this Wednesday for another FAVC match.
