On August 29th the first day of school, the Lady Spartans played CNE. I thought this might mean the girls would come out sluggish. I thought wrong! If you’re a Turpin fan this game had everything. So much so, if I wrote it all down it would be a 1000 page Nicholas Sparks novel. Not gonna happen, I’ll just give you the cliff notes.

After an hour and a half delay of the match, Saturday, the Spartans were allocated a single 36-minute period of play.
For the first 8 minutes of the match, both teams traded possession evenly. While the Fairfield midfielders were fierce in tackles, they were kept on the run by Turpin’s skillful passing, receiving and ball control.
At 32:08 in the 40-minute half, Turpin’s Skylar Huster lifted a corner from the left side. Isabel Shim volleyed the ball to Kate Muscatello who quickly passed it back to Skylar who then volleyed it deep to Claire Bailey on the back right post. Claire volleyed the ball high over everyone and into the far left net for Turpin’s first goal of the match.
At the 28 min. mark, after a Fairfield corner and a huge leaping header attempt by sophomore captain Reilly Flora, the ball bounced and was deflected into the back net for the Fairfield 1-1 equalizer.
With 3:57 remaining, a Fairfield forward broke away from a tackle and stiffed a low shot to the right side under Turpin’s charging goalie for the Indians second goal.
Just before the half, Turpin forward Cara Hauserman rifled a shot on frame from distance. The Fairfield goalie was clearly relieved that she saved a goal.
Near the 31 and 27-minute marks, Turpin’s Reilly Flora took good free kick attempts deep from 30 and 20 yards out. And, at 20 and 19 minutes, Turpin goalie Molly Glandt made excellent saves on two Fairfield shots on frame from distance.
Turpin forward Isabel Shim turned in a superb performance today. She burst to every ball, held possession well, connected passes, and at the 15 minute mark, was seen racing at the Fairfield goalie in an attempt to create a scoring opportunity for the Spartans.
Capitalizing on a lead pass by Isabel Shim at 12:56, Cara Hauserman tapped the ball past the last Fairfield Indian defender and then slotted a shot on the ground past the goalie as she was sliding for a block. Cara’s goal tied the game 2-2.
The match was drawing to a quiet close when, with just 14 seconds left, Cara Hauserman took a pass from Isabel Shim and drove a high 15-yard shot that deflected down from the top bar. Isabel followed and trapped the deflection at the 10-yard mark. Her prompt shot toward the net glanced off the Fairfield goalie’s hands and dropped along the goal line to her right. A scramble of limbs ensued between Isabel, two Fairfield defenders and their goalie at the right goal post. The goal seemed imminent but was denied by a pile of defenders.
Match accolades for hustling, footwork and passing go to: captain Kily Egan, captain Reilly Flora, Cara Hauserman, Claire Bailey and Isabel Shim.
JV Gold Season Record 1-0-1 (ECC 0-0-0)
Last Saturday the lady Spartans traveled to Oak Hills for their first game of the season. The first half had rain, the second half had sun and the girls got it done. The game started with the lady Spartans showing great energy pushing the ball forward.
