Anderson Township neighbors, soccer club teammates and childhood friends lined up as opponents today at this highly anticipated match between local rivals Turpin Spartans and McNicholas Rockets held at the Rocket’s new stadium. A beautiful, sunny Saturday afternoon made for ideal conditions for a match that would surely present one team with friendly Snapchat bragging rights over the months ahead.
Girls Soccer JV
The first of 3 games took the Lady Spartans to Mason. When playing any Mason team you better bring your best effort. The Mason girls are always usually loaded with talent on any team. This Lady Comets team is no different. They came out fast and furious against the Lady Spartans scoring in the first 3 minutes. Shortly after they had their second goal. Both goals came off an initial first save by Turpin goalie Emme Ritzenthaler. The last 9 minutes of the half would yield 2 more Mason goals, one of those from a free kick just outside the box. The score at half was Mason 4-0 over Turpin.
Despite a valient effort to come back from two goals down, JV Gold could not find the magic today. Perhaps the 103-degree heat index on the turf had an impact on their performance, but Turpin’s superb pinball style passing and ball movement, such a common sight in the past 5 matches, went missing from the Spartan’s arsenal.
On Wednesday August 31st the JV Maroon girls battled MVCA at Clearcreek Park. This is the field a lot of these girls probably got their start playing soccer. You know the days of picking weeds out of the ground as a player runs by. Probably why the fields there are so well kept.
