Putting a 21st Century spin on classical Greek history, the Spartans once again invaded Troy, seeking glory, fame, and retribution. This time, it was the Turpin Lady Spartans returning to Troy, Ohio -- hoping to improve upon last year's performance at the OHSSA Southwest Regional Cross Country Championship and earn a spot at the state championship meet.
When the Turpin cross country teams got off their bus at Voice of America Park in West Chester this past Saturday for the Southwest Ohio District Championship meet, they were hit face-on by blustery winds and cold, driving rain. At stake was a berth at next week's Regional meet in Troy, Ohio – the last stop before Ohio's State Championship. The top four teams and sixteen individuals in each District race would advance. Dampened by the weather, the varsity boys' season came to an end, while the girls found the silver lining to the day and advanced on to Troy.
Returning to Valley View Park in Milford for the last time this season, the Spartan cross country teams took on the best the Eastern Cincinnati Conference has to offer at the conference championships this past Saturday, October 12. Both the men's and the women's varsity squads took 2nd place and are looking ahead to next week's district meet as the first big step in the run toward the state championship meet.
In their last meet leading up to the ECC championship, Turpin's senior men ran together in the Division I varsity race at the St. Xavier Invitational on Saturday. Seniors Connor Barrott, Al Cliffel, Chance Collier, Jake Gebhart, Evan Gorney, Michael Jacobs, and Nick Robinson ran as "Turpin B" alongside classmates Drew Kiracofe, Phil LaPresto, Max patty, Alaeldin Tirba, and the rest of the varsity regulars.
