The Gymnastics Team attended the Basketball game on Friday January 8th to honor Gail Maundrell’s initiation into the Turpin Hall of Fame.
The Girls Gymnastics Team was spreading Christmas Cheer. They worked hard and diligent on making treats for the Inter City Youth Opportunities.
The Gymnastics team kicked off their season with a quad meet held on Tuesday December 8th against Oak Hills, Seven Hills and Cincinnati County Day.
Sophomore Gretchen Watkins competed all around for her high school debut. Freshman Maria Bushman competed in her first high school meet on 3 events.
The team began the meet on vault. Katie Lambert, Gretchen Watkins, Brittany Gardner, Maria Bushman, Kandice Williams and Emily Swertfeger competed this event.
On the uneven bars, the competitors were Kandice Williams, Brittany Gardner, Haley Witherell, Katie Lambert and Gretchen Watkins. Senior Haley W. scored an 8.2 to place 2nd in this event.
Beam was the highlight with only one fall from the 6 routines competed-- which this early in the season is quite an accomplishment and might be a record. The 6 competitors were Maria Bushman, Kandice Williams, Polina Elagin, Emily Swertfeger, Gretchen Watkins and Haley Witherell. Senior Haley W. won the event with a 9.15 and Sophomore Gretchen Watkins finished 3rd with an 8.9. Senior Emily Swertfeger and Junior Polina Elagin had career high scores to add to the team total.
Floor was the last event. Kandice Williams, Hailey Beisweinger, Polina Elagin, Maria Bushman, Brittany Gardner, Katie Lambert and Gretchen Watkins competed. Floor Junior Brittany Gardner won the event with a 9.0, which is a career high score. She was followed by Junior Katie Lambert with an 8.8 for a second place finish.
Turpin finished in second place by a small margin to Oak Hills. A good start to their season. The next meet is January 9th at Cincinnati Country Day.
Gymnasts finish as City Runner Up Haley Witherell All-Around city Champion. The team finished 2nd to a tough Mason team and was able to hit excellent floor routines to edge Lakota East by .35.
